HLF Policy

Healthy Local Foods has had many successes with promoting local and healthy food choices such as:

• With the help of Fort Lewis College for web design, a Mesa Verde Guide will be launched that includes an online database providing information about what products local farmers have available for purchase by restaurants, schools and other institutions.

• As a result of this event, Durango Public Schools now buys 100% of their ground beef from a local, organic producer for school years through 2011.

• 77% of Iron Chef survey respondents said as a result of the event, they were more likely to try a recipe that included healthy local foods, and 90% said that they were more likely to go to a restaurant that highlighted healthy local foods.

• HLF and The Garden Project were able to create school activities incorporating community gardens and integrating food from the gardens into a classroom curriculum, including a cooking class at the youth detention center.

• Raised garden beds were built and will be in use at the senior center starting next season. Through the wide variety of strategies and numerous partners involved, HLF has effectively reached the schools, youth, general community members and seniors in Durango with healthy local food options.
